The CEO of Every Child Counts (ECC), Bindu Balakrishnan officially opened a brand-new kitchen facility at Mutunkei Primary School on 11th August 2023. This project is a testament to ECC’s unwavering dedication to improving the lives of young learners and fostering a brighter future for communities
The construction of the kitchen at Mutunkei Primary School was a response to a pressing need in the school. The modern kitchen replaced a small mud-walled kitchen, the school management knew they needed a better kitchen but could not afford to construct one. ECC is also supporting a feeding program in the school which supports about 150 needy children. The children get a cup of porridge and egg at 10 o’clock and a plate of food at lunch hour.
The newly opened kitchen at Mutunkei Primary School has incredible impacts. Students now have access to their meals on time. The ECC feeding program has provided food to children who couldn’t afford lunch. This is good for learners’ bodies and minds, it has improved their concentration in class and thus their academic achievement. Aside from the immediate physical benefits, school attendance has grown dramatically, as has overall school achievement
The kitchen was fitted with energy-efficient cooking jikos. The school now uses much less firewood to prepare meals and there is less smoke in the school. The use of less wood fuel is good for the environment. The Government of Kenya has been encouraging schools to turn to energy-saving cooking methods to reduce carbon emissions and thus reduce climate change.
Every Child Counts’ investment in the kitchen facility reaffirms its commitment to empowering young learners with the tools they need to succeed. We thank all well-wishers who supported the construction of the kitchen and the feeding program.
